Plastic door locks do not last as long as they used to, according to new research published in the medical journal Plastic Surgery.
The study found that for every 1,000 plastic door locks, the locks didn’t last five years or more, which is about the same as the five-year survival rate for the average person.
It also found that the locks were less likely to break down during the year-and-a-half of their lifespan.
“I would say that the durability of the plastic door lock has increased considerably over the last five to 10 years,” said lead researcher Dr. William R. Johnson, an associate professor at Emory University in Atlanta.
“We’ve got this new material that is much stronger and much harder than the material that was in the previous lock,” he said.
The new material is also much more resilient than traditional plastic, which could make it more durable than older lock designs.
“The more we use the technology, the more likely it is to fail, but the more we understand about it, the better it becomes,” Johnson said.
Dr. Andrew D. D’Aquili, a professor of medical engineering and materials science at Emories University, who was not involved in the study, said the new material’s strength is comparable to a steel door.
“It’s very durable, and it’s relatively easy to do,” D’Alio said.
“You can put it in a small box, put it on a shelf, or put it outside on the patio or in the garage.
You can put them in the freezer for months at a time, and that’s what you want.
And this material is very lightweight.
It weighs about 20 pounds.”
He added that the material is resistant to chemicals used in industrial applications and could be used to replace old door locks for home security.
The researchers have been experimenting with various types of locks to see which type of lock was the most durable.
“One of the things we’re trying to do is figure out what is the most economical way to make a lock that would be both durable and would have the ability to last five or 10 years with all the things that you need to do to it, including the corrosion resistance,” Johnson explained.
“So this is a really interesting new material, and one that is going to be really useful for many different types of applications.”
